Septic tanks were the ideal waste management solution for rural properties and other properties located a considerable distance from the main drainage system.
Septic tanks were a cost effective way of handling waste without having to invest significant money in sewage infrastructure or associated pumping stations.
Under the 2020 Septic Tank Regulations introduced in 2015, the UK government set out to end the practice of septic tanks discharging directly into local watercourses like streams and rivers. Any septic tank discharging in such a way must be replaced no later than 1st January 2020. If you still have one of these older systems on your site contact us today for a quotation to modernise or replace your system to make it compliant with the latest legislation.
If your septic tank discharges directly to a watercourse, you need to do one of the following as soon as possible:
- connect to a mains sewer
- install a drainage field (also known as an infiltration system) so the septic tank can discharge to ground instead
- replace your septic tank with a small sewage treatment plant
